I thought it might be appropriate here to actually introduce the content of the children's story I am considering completing, at some point. The intent is to introduce children to idioms. Everybody know what those are, right? OK. IF anyone comes up with a good continuing story line I would greatly accept the comments and verse.
Here is the story as it stands now:
A Fish Out of Water
A children's Introduction to Idioms
by Thomas E Genders
Barnaby was a brook trout who, quite frankly, had seen enough of the brook.
He was tired of the same old "go with the flow" attitude of his peers.
One Tuesday, driven by a whim and a very sturdy set of pectoral fins,
he decided to flop his way onto the riverbank to see what all the fuss was about.
He quickly realized that life on land was a different “kettle of fish” entirely.
For starters, the air was surprisingly dry, and the local squirrels were not nearly as polite as the minnows back home. He felt like a total “fish out of water”, gasping at the sheer audacity of gravity. A passing heron watched him with a look that suggested Barnaby was “shooting fish in a barrel”, but Barnaby wasn't about to “give up the ghost” that easily. He tried to strike up a conversation with a garden gnome, but the gnome was “cold as a fish” and didn't say a word.
Just as Barnaby was starting to feel like he’d “bitten off more than he could chew,”
a sudden summer rainstorm turned the grass into a makeshift slip-and-slide.
With a splash and a wiggle, he slid right back into the cool, familiar current.
His friends gathered 'round, eager for the gossip, but Barnaby just blew a few bubbles. He knew that telling them the truth would just be “a red herring” - some things you just have to experience for yourself. Back in the safety of the reeds, he decided that while the world above was interesting, he was much happier being a “big fish in a small pond”.
Yes, I know it is too short. I read that the average children's book is 20 to 24 pages. This manuscript looks to be about five ... with water-color graphics developed for each page.
Anyway, what do you think of the concept? I will leave it here.
